Phase 2 · Grow

Google Business Profile Management

For most local businesses, the map pack produces more enquiries per pound than anything else. It’s also the cheapest thing on our pricing page, and the fastest to show movement.

The problem

Three results get almost all the clicks

When someone searches for a local service, Google shows a map with three businesses above the organic results. Those three take the overwhelming majority of the attention.

Position four is a click away, behind “more places”, and might as well not exist.

Most businesses have a profile. Far fewer manage it. It was claimed once, the categories were set roughly, a few photos went up in 2023, and nothing has happened since. Meanwhile a competitor posts weekly, responds to every review, keeps their services list current — and sits in the three.

This is the single most neglected asset in local marketing, and it’s also the one where consistent effort produces visible movement fastest.

How the map pack actually ranks businesses

Relevance, distance, prominence

Google is unusually open about this. Three factors decide local rankings.

Relevance — how well your profile matches what was searched

This is the most controllable. Categories, services, business description and the words in your reviews all feed it. A profile with a vague primary category and no services listed is invisible for most of what it should rank for.

Distance — how close you are to the searcher

This is the one nobody can optimise away, and honesty about it matters. A business in Ilford will rank strongly for Ilford, Redbridge and Barking searches. It will rarely appear in the map pack for “digital agency London”, because that pack fills with businesses near central London. We know this because it applies to us — our own strategy is built around owning East London in the map pack and competing for London organically.

Prominence — how well known and well regarded you are

Reviews are the biggest lever here: quantity, recency, rating and whether you respond. Citations across directories, links, and general web presence all contribute.

What actually moves the needle, in order
What to do if the maths doesn't work

Three options, in order of usefulness: increase what a customer is worth (higher-value services, retainers, repeat purchase), improve your close rate on the leads you already get, or improve conversion rate so fewer clicks produce more leads. All three change the answer. Bidding differently doesn’t.

Our position

We’d rather run this calculation with you on the first call and tell you not to spend, than take a management fee for a campaign that can’t be profitable. It happens often enough that it’s worth saying upfront.

Who this is for

GBP management probably fits if

You serve customers in a defined local area

People search for your service with a location attached

You have fewer than twenty reviews on your profile

Competitors appear in the map pack and you don't

You want visible movement in weeks rather than months

It probably isn’t for you if you sell nationally with no local component, or if you’re purely ecommerce. In those cases the map pack isn’t where your buyers are, and the money is better spent on SEO or Ads.

Where this fits

Grow is phase two of four

This is usually the cheapest sensible starting point in the whole system for a local business. At £295 a month it's the lowest commitment we offer, and it produces visible movement faster than SEO does.

It depends on phase one being right in one specific way: your website’s name, address and phone must match your profile exactly. Where they disagree — and they usually do — that inconsistency actively suppresses local rankings. Fixing it is part of this work.

It also feeds phase three. Map pack enquiries arrive mostly as phone calls, which is precisely the channel most businesses fail to track. Without call tracking, you can’t tell this is working.
